Midweek Nudge #67

“We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”

— Joseph Campbell

Hi there!

Here’s your gentle nudge to make your week more interesting, thoughtful and productive. You can always talk to me more about these ideas by replying to this email.

What Makes A Great Story?

Perseverance is a great word. It helps people push beyond their limits, and it sells books. Overall, the idea of going at it when all seems bleak makes it sound like a noble pursuit, as the final challenge in the hero’s journey. But, what makes great stories great is not just the fact that someone persevered.

Take most great stories from your favourite classic to a Pixar movie, and you’ll find what makes it great and relatable is not that the protagonist persevered and got what they wanted. Instead, it is the idea of them being fine with not getting whatever they desired despite their perseverance.

Perhaps, that is all there is to it. The reason movies like Soul or books like Peter Pan move us is because there is a sense of acceptance despite perseverance in most of those stories. It is excellent to want things. It is even better to persevere. When all is said and done, there is peace in acceptance. Perseverance makes a great arc; closure makes a great story.

I’ll let you take that thought forward and do whatever you may with it.

What’s On My Mind?

The secrets to improving our lives are out in the open. The secrets are all out, and nothing is rocket science. Generations over generations have shared the same tips over and over again because they work. Change begins when we start asking ourselves: So, when do I start following the damn advice?

I hope this added some value to your week. Stay safe, stay inspired, and I’ll talk to you next week.
